Adventures with Toby

Greg and I went to Marin yesterday to visit my parents, and spend the day off relaxing. It was a beautiful day, definitely around 80 degrees or so, but with a nice breeze. As I mentioned a few posts ago, every time I go there I always mean to get some photos taken in the creek area behind our house. Growing up, I was down there with my brother nearly every day exploring the terrain. Since I can remember I have always been a lover of forests. I feel so at home in them. Here are some photos that I took walking around the trees with Toby, our family dog who looks like a giant fox. I always joke with my friends saying that my dream would be to live with a pack of wolves in a forest, but still run around in my favorite dresses. I think this is as close as I'll get to that.

I always throw this Karen Walker dress on when it's warm out. It's a nice light fabric, and its flowy fit feels nice in the heat and doesn't cling to my skin if I'm sweaty. Plus, it's another dress of mine that has pockets! I love that it's chambray, and I also love the pleated collar. Matched with my cat shoes, it was a pretty simple outfit. I was worried about the lighting, but looking at these photos now I actually like how the splotched sun spots look in them.

Boobmountain

I'm sure you're all wondering what boobmountain is. That's completely understandable. Let me tell you. Boobmountain is the name of my good friend Laura's new etsy shop! If you're on the hunt for a fun new dress, classic pair of high waisted jeans, or a cute pair of overalls, this is the shop for you. She just opened up for business a couple of weeks ago, but it's already full of gems. Check out some of my favorites below, or head to the shop yourself to start browsing!

She's offering you all 10% off of your purchase with the code TENPERCENT4U until the end of May, so check it out and find that perfect summer piece before someone else does!

Kate Spade Fall 2014 Ready-to-Wear

So as much as I feel like I should be sharing my favorite spring and summer collections right now, I keep seeing amazing fall winter collections that I want to share before they disappear from my mind. The first look from this collection (that I posted above) reminds me so much of Jackie O. I love everything about this Kate Spade ready to wear for fall 2014. I love the leopard prints mixed in with the reds and wool textures. I love the classic looking black bags. I love the subtle feminine details with the more masculine silhouettes. And I love the beaded pieces and feathers. I want it to be fall already. I'm ready to whip out my leopard print coats and walk around with leather gloves on again.

I've posted some of my favorite looks from the collection, but you can check them all out here.

Twilight Princess

Took these photos pretty late in the day yesterday. While I spent most of my day running errands and staying as far away from Bay to Breakers as possible, I didn't get around to outfit photos until the Sun had started to set. I know they don't let the clothes show as well, but I still love twilight photos like these, and clearly used it as and excuse to make the title a Zelda reference. I also loved how in the background of the photos you can see the dark clouds coming in.

I wore my lilac Dear Creatures dress which I got about a year ago at one of the Dear Creatures sample sales at Asmbly Hall which is located on Fillmore. I paired it with some navy blue tights, and my cream coat. I wish the navy tights showed up more, because I loved how the cream, lilac and navy looked together. Oh, and I finally popped on a piece of jewelry to make things a little bit more exciting. It's a little fox ring that I bought while working at Madewell a couple of years ago. I love how tiny but detailed it is.

Lastly, I wanted to share a photo of my coat pockets, because they're fake-out pockets, which I love. Fake-out meaning that if you were to look at them, they seem like they'd be accessed from the flap at the top, however the pocket is actually accessed through the seam down the middle. Check out the photo to see what I mean. I'd like to think they help throw off pickpockets.

Karen Walker Acorn Necklaces

I had to post a few pictures of these acorn necklaces by Karen Walker. Karen Walker never ceases to amaze me. She has managed to create perfect sunglasses, perfect clothing as well as bags and accessories, and perfect jewelry. I don't know how she does it all. I first saw this image on the Karen Walker instagram. It immediately brought me back to my childhood because it reminded me of the acorns that Mei and Satsuki find in the movie Totoro. The acorns in the movie glimmer in the sunlight, and as a child I always thought that acorns would be a golden brown. I was always disappointed when I'd collect them, and even go as far as washing them in the sink, all the while they remained a dull brown. Nowadays, I still love the way that acorns look, even without being shiny, but I love that these necklaces are exactly how I always imagined acorns would be after watching Totoro.

The necklaces range from around $300-$900, so clearly they are not necklaces that I'll be purchasing anytime soon (or ever, sadly). However if you want to check them out along with all of Karen Walker's other adorable jewelry, you can view them here. And if you're coveting an acorn necklace for yourself and like myself, are unable to drop a few Benjamin's on them, searching for "acorn necklace" on etsy produces some great affordable options. This one is quite similar to the Karen Walker style with its leaf and acorn combination, and I myself own an acorn necklace that's similar to this one. The one that I have is an older style from Madewell.

Also if for any reason you haven't seen the movie Totoro, I recommend that you watch it as soon as possible. I can't find any decent videos of Mei collecting the acorns and finding Totoro, but it's better in full movie form anyways. In fact, if you live in or around San Francisco, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts is doing their annual Miyazaki film screenings this month. Totoro will be playing on May 18th, and there are many more amazing Miyazaki films being shown. More information on that here

Too Hot

Okay so I accidentally was really lazy with posting this week. But as previously mentioned, I am not a creature of sunny weather, so I tend to retreat to my house with the blinds closed when it gets too warm out, so that I can hibernate until it's safe outside again. However I do have to leave the house for work, so this was one of those trips home. Sometimes I'll take the 6 bus, which drops you off right at the top of these stairs. It has such a lovely view of the Sunset area (I posted a picture that shows the view in that last photo).

When it's hot out I, like most people I presume, like to wear as little as possible. This dress is such a nice light fabric, and I love the slight v-neckline on the backside of the dress, so I just threw it on with some ferragamos and kept it really basic. It's the only drop waist dress that I own, but I'd love to find some more in the future. It was such a steal, I think it was $15.99 on sale at Urban Outfitters. They actually matched the price for me in-store, because it was cheaper online. One of the sales associates found two left in my size according to the computer, and after we both searched the sales section for about 15 minutes, I found one in my size crumpled under a sales rack. Success! I'm always willing to fight to find the pieces I want.

Oh and I forgot to mention the best part about this dress: it has pockets! I don't know about all of you, but that will pretty much seal the deal of purchase for me. Also if anyone noticed, I got a haircut! Thank goodness, it was just in time for the heatwave.

Even if I don't like the heat, I admit that it's always really nice to see the ocean so clearly like this every now and then.
